How We Raise Funds

Voluntary Donations

A voluntary donation is based on the belief and support of the Vision and Mission of the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund, and is reciprocated with a letter of acknowledgement for the voluntary donation.

Individuals and businesses world-wide make voluntary donations either by direct deposits or mailing their cheque to the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund ®.

Making a donation is voluntary and not pre-conditioned by requests for an endorsement and/or use of the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund's registered trademark and brand.   Independent projects raise funds based on their own merits and trademark, and a well-functioning marketing plan.

Fundraising Partnerships

In order to meet our budget for grants spending annually, the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund forms Fundraising Partnerships with Corporates or Organisations that guarantee a donation of a minimum R1 million for the restricted use of our registered trademark through a legally binding agreement.  Through these partnerships, we are able to guarantee grant distribution of R40 million per annum to projects throughout South Africa that meet the objectives of our four Programmes.

The Nelson Mandela Children's Fund ® has several registered trademarks and logos.  Use of these trademarks are restricted to the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund ® and Accredited Fundraising Partners of the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund ®.

International Affiliates

The Nelson Mandela Children's Fund ® has legally instituted international affiliates that bear the name and trademark of the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund ® and financially supports the Programme Objectives of the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund ® in South Africa.

Fundraising Initiatives

The Donor Relations Unit drives the fundraising efforts of the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund ®. Through partnerships with individuals and businesses, using innovative and creative fundraising tools, the Donor Relations Unit raises income by adhering to its Fundraising Policy, Trademark Regulations, and compliance with these Acts :

- Merchandise & Marks Act (1941) which protects the name, image, signature, effigy, etc. of Mr Nelson R. Mandela;

- Intellectual Properties Act (1997) which protects the registered trademarks and images of the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund ®;

- The Non-Profit Organisations Act (1997) which promotes good governance within Non-profit Organisations, and protects the public who make donations to Non-profit Organisations.

What we do with the Funds

The Nelson Mandela Children's Fund ® implements four Programmes to meet its advocacy objective of "changing the way society treats children and youth."

- Skills Development Programme strengthens the family's potential to provide for social and educational needs of young children;  equips youth from poverty backgrounds with market-orientated skills, ensures that youth who have dropped out of the system (such as those involved in crime) are offered viable alternatives;

- Well-being of the Child Programme rehabilitates the lives of children living in the street by providing alternative models of care such as healthy family and community environments, and supports early detection of new street children.  It also helps to build safe communities to prevent child abuse, and provides support for children in distress through court support, and neighbourhood victim support;

- Disability Programme integrates and empowers disabled children by improving interaction between ‘mainstream children' and those who are differently able through unified activities in sports, arts, and cultural initiatives;

-  Leadership & Excellence Programme equips youth with life skills and entrepreneurship skills, to enable them to participate in our country's economy.

- Goelama Programme (Goelama - a Sotho word means - to nurture and care for the vulnerable)

- Goelama improves the lives of HIV/AIDS affected children (orphans/child-headed households), through HIV/AIDS education, and mobilising communities to take responsibility for orphans and child-headed households;
