18 July is a birthday of the late former President Nelson R. Mandela, founder of Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund and its sister organisations. Mandela Day is a call to action for every individual, group, corporate, to take responsibility for making the world a better place, one step at a time, in response to areas of need within their communities and guided by means at their disposal. Continue reading about what we have in store for Mandela Month this year.

Mandela's long walk to freedom included a pair of Hi-Tec classic tennis shoes, which became his favourite footwear.

Hi-Tec are doing their part in continuing Mr Mandela’s legacy. They are releasing his iconic sneaker, the Hi-Tec Freedom 67s (as a symbol of 67 years dedicated to fighting for social justice). Limited to just 67 pairs and shared with 67 individuals who can make the biggest difference in creating freedom for others.
Hi-Tec will auction 1 of these 67 limited edition sneakers to raise funds for the Nelson Mandela Children’s fund.

Dance your way through #MandelaMonth!

A major part of our Children's Celebration is children's participation. Due to the current climate, we have had to come up with innovative ways to do this in a fun and inclusive manner.

As such, we have created a #DigitalDanceChallenge to one of our long-time supporters, Media Personality, ProVerb's song 'Legacy'. Our YLP team choreographed the dance.

We urge you to participate in the challenge by dancing, uploading your video on your social media channel of your choice and tagging @NMCF.

The Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital

The Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital (NMCH) is a dedicated paediatric facility serving the children of Southern Africa. What this hospital does is centered on giving children the one thing they need the most: the ability to just be children.

At a time when the global community is devastated by COVID-19, NMCH has had to adapt and subsequently make provisions to deal with potential cases and continue providing critical care to our patients. This has been made possible, thanks to our community who continue to support our hospital in a meaningful way, leaving a lasting impact.

Jacaranda FM is BACK!
In 2019, Jacaranda FM’s Good Morning Angels on Breakfast with Martin Bester raised R1.8 million of funds from pledges made by the station’s listeners on 18 July, International Mandela Day.

We’re excited to announce that Jacaranda FM is once again assisting us in donations for the patients at our Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital.

What Mandela Day Means

Making a Meaningful Contribution to Madiba’s Legacy
Nelson Mandela Day was launched in recognition of Nelson Mandela’s birthday on 18 July,2009, via unanimous decision of the United Nations General Assembly.

It was inspired by a call Nelson R. Mandela made a year earlier, for next generations to take on the burden of leadership in addressing the world’s social injustices and he said that
“It is in your hands now”.

It is more than a celebration of Madiba’s life and legacy. It is a global movement to honourhis life’s work and act to change the world for the better.
As the Fund we encourage individuals to find initiatives within their various communities to do their 67 Minutes of service.

Mandela Day is as much an energiser to the Children’s Fund. The joy of being allowed to be children, to play, sing, dance, dream and be lost in the wonder of the innocence of childhood that should be delivered from homelessness, poverty, hunger, harm, danger, vulnerability, neglect and diseases.

Any assistance given and received by the Fund or its partners counts to make everyone who shares the vision of the Fund a fellow traveler and commits to the belief that Every Child Counts.
