In 1996, a remarkable piece of history was sold at auction: a simple pair of Hi‑Tec tennis shoes once worn by Nelson Mandela during his imprisonment on Robben Island, a powerful symbol of resilience, dignity and endurance.
Recognising their meaning, Hi‑Tec Chairman Frank van Wezel acquired the shoes and launched the brand’s Freedom Campaign, inspired by Madiba’s legacy and the spirit of perseverance that transformed a nation. Today, that legacy continues with the Hi‑Tec Freedom Shoe, a commemorative re‑creation that features a printed signature of Nelson Mandela integrated into the outer design.
Only 30 pairs have been produced worldwide to honour the 30th anniversary of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, making this an exceptionally rare commemorative edition. A portion of proceeds continues to support the Fund’s life‑changing work for children across South Africa, ensuring that this item carries both historic and humanitarian significance.
This year, for Human Rights Day, South Africa marks 30 years of the Bill of Rights under the theme: “Making Human Dignity Real.” Rooted in the legacy of the Sharpeville Massacre, this day reminds us that the rights we uphold today were hard won through sacrifice and collective struggle led by leaders like Nelson Mandela and Robert Sobukwe.
For children, human rights are not abstract. They mean safety, dignity, access to education, and the ability to grow free from violence and exclusion.
As we mark 30 years of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, we are reminded that advancing children’s rights is central to making dignity real, not just in principle, but in practice.

Nelson Mandela said it. At the 30th Anniversary Gala, 14-year-old Amogelang Mashele proved it.
As President of the Nelson Mandela Children's Parliament, Amogelang took the stage alongside former presidents, CEOs, and corporate leaders, and earned a standing ovation from the entire room.

Nelson Mandela spoke those words in 1995 when he launched the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund. One of the most tangible outcomes of that vision is the Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital.
The hospital provides specialised paediatric care that is often unavailable elsewhere in the region, with children travelling from across Africa for life-saving treatment.
At the 30th Anniversary Gala, the hospital's impact was showcased as proof of what sustained commitment can achieve.

Inspiring work truly making a difference
President Thabo Mbeki delivered the keynote address at the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund 30th Anniversary Gala, and he did not hold back:
🗣️ "The failure to realise children's rights is not a crisis limited to this country. The world is engaged in a systematic failure to protect its youngest citizens."
Children bear the cost of failures they had no part in creating.
But Mbeki also issued a call to action, urging all of society to join hands to realise "the dream and vision which Madiba kept alive until his dying day."
A challenge, not just a celebration.

If there's any black leader i will always admire ither than Madiba, it is former president Thabo Mbeki. Why do i hold this man with esteem and the answer is that he mastered the economy and only to be let down by: -The private sector (for not grabbing the opportunity to create jobs) -The trade unions (for not exerting pressure on the private sector to create jobs) -:His own organisation (that chose to recall him when he was only six months to go, while he was bust advising the whole continent on who to remain economically independent). His organisation chose to let ly country join the very block that was cale into existence as a result of being inspired d by his ideals , the BRIC. Dumb! This, however, doesn't imply that i follow him blindly, by ni means! I'm a conservative christian and he is not! But the dufference is that i admire every South African who demonstrate lively ideals andbi hate cirruption just like General Holomisa because it cripples the future aspects of the country! –
