It all began with our Founder, Nelson R. Mandela when he pledged one-third of his presidential salary to found and perpetuate the work of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund. His pledge was the start of fundraising efforts for The Fund and the inception of the NMCF President’s Club membership.

The Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund (NMCF) had the advantage of its Founder & Chairperson, at inception in 1995, being the globally celebrated humanitarian and icon, President Nelson R. Mandela. While travelling worldwide as Head of State, the revered statesman always was available for children and attended a Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund activation. This greatly enhanced the global footprint of the NMCF and our worldwide donor base, as represented in the diagram below. While, the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund is headquartered in South Africa, it has two registered affiliates in the United Kingdom and the United States of America. Our generous global support, was the impetus for the founding of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund (NMCF) Globetrotter (Goodwill Ambassador).

Introduction

The Year 2024 marks eleven years since Mandela’s passing. Continuing from last year’s “Legacy in Action,” the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund International Mandela Day campaign themed “Gone but not Forgotten – the Legacy in Action” will carry on with the Mandelathon.

Launched in July 2023, this campaign gives everyone an opportunity to be a part of keeping his legacy alive. Radio as a medium will enable the Fund to include radio listeners and supporters who have generously supported the work of the Fund since its inception. The 2023 campaign was run through 702 Radio, and going forward, we call upon all radio stations to air this campaign and get everyone involved.

This Mandela Day, let’s come together to fight child poverty! The alarming statistics show that 4.8 million children in South Africa live below the poverty line, and 62.1% face multidimensional poverty. It’s time to act!

Our goal this year is to raise R1,000,000 to combat poverty in underprivileged communities across South Africa. Since launching our Nelson Mandela Day fundraising initiative (Mandelathon) on July 18, 2023, we’ve developed programs to reach children nationwide, providing them with essential support. However, we need your support to make this dream a reality We are calling on businesses to join forces with us, amplifying our impact by matching employee donations. Together, we can create a significant difference in the lives of these young people that we serve. Your support is crucial in helping us reach more children and empower them to break free from the cycle of poverty.

Time to join the cause!
