Concept Note

The annual 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children’s Campaign, from November 25 to December 10, is a crucial period to address gender-based violence (GBV). Building on last year’s collaboration between the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund (The Fund) and REPSSI-SA, we emphasized the necessity of involving boys and young men in combating GBVF by supporting them in dealing with trauma. This year, our theme for the special 16 days of Activism Campaign is “Boy Joy : A Weapon Against Violence”.

Our initiative, the Girl Power Meets Boy Joy programme, led by the dedicated Child Safety and Protection team, introduces “The Boy Joy Summit: A Weapon Against Violence.” This groundbreaking event targets boys in grades 9 and 10 across South Africa, encouraging them to play an active role in preventing, addressing, and redressing GBV. The Summit will take place on the 10th of December.

Objectives

  1. Raise awareness and understanding of GBV among participating boys.
  2. Empower boys with the knowledge and tools to actively prevent and address GBV.
  3. Strengthen networks and connections among boys from different provinces, fostering unity and shared purpose.
  4. Generate innovative ideas and strategies to combat GBV within South African communities.
