This Global Handwashing Day, the theme “Be a Handwashing Hero!” reminds us that good hygiene helps prevent the spread of disease and protects children’s health. But children also need access to clean water, soap and safe sanitation facilities to make handwashing possible.

How do we protect children from violence as digital technologies create new forms of harm? Today, at the 48th Ordinary Session of the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC) in Lesotho, discussions are focusing on preventing violence against children and addressing risks in the digital environment.
The Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund welcomes the Committee’s efforts to strengthen collaboration across African Union mechanisms and commends its Chairperson, Hon. Sabrina Gahar, for advancing this work.
This priority is reflected in NMCF’s new strategy, "Khuluma Mntwana Sikuzwe", which prioritises interventions addressing violence against children through advocacy and poverty alleviation. NMCF has also submitted a proposal for consideration in revising the Committee’s 2027 Day of the African Child theme to address digital issues.
Protecting children requires coordinated action that keeps their rights, safety and wellbeing at the centre.
